Annie — Service
Annie Oakley! Annie was matched with me through American Humane’s Pups4Patriots Program. Pups4Patriots specializes in pairing veterans with PTSD and TBI with service dogs who will change their lives. Annie is a rescue from Michigan, who was taken to Mebane, NC for service dog training. From abandoned and abused, Annie has her own past that is unrecognizable to who she is now. The moment I saw her, in my heart I felt what sunlight on your skin feels like on a cold day. We’ve been inseparable since. Annie never takes her eyes off of me while we are working. She is practically glued to my hip, and she wants to be! She puts herself in front or behind me to make me feel more safe when strangers are too close to us as she senses me becoming uncomfortable. She’s waken me from countless nightmares and somehow knows when I’m swallowing myself in anxiety or depression. Wherever I go, she follows. If I’m nervous, she will lean into me and look up at me making sure that I know she is right there. The fear that I constantly face has become a shadow in the sunshine of her yellow. An American Hero Dog is nothing shy of ordinary. Annie and I aren’t either. Annie helps prove that any breed has the ability to work and provide helpful services to so many different kinds of issues. I, myself, represent one of the truly countless amounts of people who suffer with PTSD from Military Sexual Trauma and sexual trauma in any form. Some think I’m a hero for serving…but Annie is the real hero.
