Boogie Shoes — Emerging Hero
In 2015, while volunteering at our local animal shelter the tiniest Chihuahua I had ever seen arrived at the intake counter. He weighed 12 ounces, was 7 weeks old and had a very distinct “wobble” that made it difficult for him to keep his balance even to take a few steps. He could barely hold up his head, and was severely dehydrated. The person who brought him in said they found him in a nearby parking lot, but it was pretty clear this little guy’s size and health issues that he didn’t get there by himself, especially in the 100+ degree heat. My husband and I offered to foster him and named him Boogie Shoes because no matter what he was doing it looked like he was dancing to his own tune!
It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with him and officially adopt him, knowing that he was going to require a little extra of everything as a special needs pet. Boogie was diagnosed with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a neurological condition caused by infection, malnutrition, poisoning or injury in utero, and impacts coordination and motor skills. Now full-grown and thriving Boogie weighs a whopping 2.2 pounds and most days his giant tongue, seriously nice gams and feisty attitude outshine his disability.
Boogie Shoes is an Emerging Hero because through his advocacy efforts, website and social media he shines a light on special needs pets, working to remove the stigma that pets with disabilities, chronic illness, behavior or other special needs are any less deserving of loving home.
