Buster — Emerging Hero
Buster is a rescue dog and our Denton County CERT canine. CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Teams, a volunteer org that trains people how to respond in a disaster. There is no official canine program, but Buster has stepped into that role. Within days of adopting Buster, he was on stage at Congressman Michael Burgess’ Emergency Fair, helping me present on pet preparedness for disasters. Buster is also a trained therapy dog and visits a behavioral hospital to help military PTSD patients and others. But, in his role as a CERT dog, he educates the community on disaster preparedness as well as helps those we train learn how to identify animal behaviors under stress, during disasters so they don’t put themselves at risk. We have learned a lot about how people deal with stress when separated from their animals during disasters. Buster is a great reminder to families to have a pet plan. He is also helpful in recruiting volunteers to train as CERT responders. I’m so amazed at Buster’s love for others. He works so hard in his therapy visits and extra hard in CERT. I’d love to tell his story and help America learn the importance of pet preparedness as well. Buster is a great ambassador of this message.
