Ginger — Therapy
Ginger and I have been a Certified Therapy Team for 3 years. We volunteer for programs sponsored by Hinsdale Humane Society and DuPage Paws for People. Our mission at DuPage Paws for People is to visit special needs classrooms supporting teachers and staff in their efforts to improve skills, bring comfort and nurture well-being through human animal interactions. We participate in READ programs at local libraries which assist children with reading skills and build self esteem by providing them the opportunity to read one on one to Ginger. We visit seniors in memory care. How is Ginger a hero? She embodies joy and brings a smile to all…child and senior alike. Today’s world can be cold and scary, but a few minutes with Ginger brings happy memories to seniors and they begin to talk about their favorite pet. Ginger’s photo is a photo of her playing her piano…music is a universal language and the vision impaired children can hear Ginger’s audio repertoire, they also proudly walk Ginger during visits without their canes and those with behavior disorders find Ginger’s calming influence a respite during the demands of the day. Ginger embodies “it is in giving we receive” because she provides unconditional love to all she visits. There is much yet to learn about the benefits of the impact of human animal interactions, but Ginger’s role of providing comfort, love and joy serves as a shining example to the difference her presence makes in the daily lives of those she visits.
