Oakley — Search and Rescue
Oakley is a sweet, affectionate, smart, three year old Border Collie. Oakley chose me the day I met her and not only has she helped my dreams come true with being a dog handler for Search & Rescue but also gave me the opportunity to bring joy to kids at Children’s Hospital as a therapy dog.
From the start, she was easy to train. She quickly learned the ropes of being an air scent search K9 and certified her first time when she was a little over 2 years old. My team would always work with cadaver, but this discipline wasn’t on my agenda to certify with her. However, with down time in between air scent tasks, I’d work Oakley on it. She quickly showed me how much she enjoyed this discipline.
This past year in 2018, we attended a seminar, for which I did not sign up to test for cadaver. I signed up to train, and when the evaluators watched Oakley work, they encouraged me to test, as she was a natural. Oakley passed with flying colors!
We were quickly deployed to a crime scene shortly thereafter being certified. This was a high profile case, for which they were needing the K9’s to locate evidence. I am proud to say, Oakley did her job well and found what they investigators needed!
Oakley serves her community of Pittsburgh both as a Search K9 and a therapy dog and most of all her family as a loving companion.
