Shasta — Therapy

Charity Partner: Attitudes in Reverse
Location: Bordentown, New Jersey

I have had Shasta in my life for 6 years. She was an owner surrender at a high kill shelter in Athens Georgia and a friend just happened to post a picture of her. Something in her eyes just drew me to her. Even though I was in New Jersey and she was in Georgia I had to know more about her. When I inquired about her I found out she had less than 24 hrs until she was to be euthanized. a few hours later I found out a rescue group out of New York was planning to pull her from the shelter and save her! I contacted the rescue and filled out an application without knowing anything about her. It turned out she was very ill with heart worm disease and would need to stay in her NY foster for treatment. Four months past with weekly updates from the foster Mom and the day finally came when she was healthy enough to be adopted. She fit right in with our family and has been an amazing dog for my two sons, one who has mental health issues. I saw immediately how she brought him comfort and emotional support and knew I wanted to share her love. I started the process of getting her certified as an emotional support therapy dog with classes and Canine Good Citizen certification from the AKC. She passed both her CGC and Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dog test with flying colors. We work with the AIR Dogs Paws For Minds program through Attitudes In Reverse bringing education to students on good mental health and suicide prevention. We saved her life and now in turn she is saving other’s lives
