Sophie — Therapy

Charity Partner: Pet Partners
Location: PALESTINE, Texas

IT’S NOT EASY BEING THE ONLY DOG IN TOWN! Sophie and I are the only registered Pet Partners team in town. My bucket list for retirement was to become a therapy team. While working in our public school I had the opportunity to witness what a therapy dog in one of our classrooms meant to the students. I purchased what I hoped would be the perfect dog. I told her on the way to her new home what my plan was( she threw up on me all the way home–her first car trip). I assured her this would not work as I had big plans for the two of us and it would include a lot of car trips. After several months she was able to take trips with no problems! It’s been uphill the rest of the way! We volunteer in our local school and have just begun the Read With Me program. Once a week we travel 45 miles to volunteer in a residential treatment center for boys. Also, we are “on call” at the local district attorney’s office. Sophie offers her support to young victims before having to testify and during interviews. Recently the judge allowed us to accompany a sexual abuse victim into the courtroom. Sophie sat by her side for the entire testimony. This was a first for our county! I am a CASA volunteer and am able to use Sophie to help the children on my caseload. I have many stories to support the difference Sophie has made in many children’s lives—most I can’t relate without shedding a tear or two. http://www.palestineherald.com/news/therapy-animal-teams-needed-in-anderson-county/article_3e
