Tara — Therapy
Tara is a survivor who has learned how to trust and bring joy to others. She was captured as a stray and adopted at 19 months old from Fuzzy Friends Rescue in Waco, Texas. The untrained and shy Australian Shepard/Pyrenees required continuous and consistent exercise and was slow in performing the basic obedience command of sit. However, in June of 2013 she successfully tested and was registered as a Therapy Dog with Pet Partners, Inc. She immediately began to engage with hospital patients and school children. Not until September of 2016 did an x-ray discover a 1 and 1/4 inch nail embedded in the middle of her right hind leg. She had been shot with a nail gun while astray and pain caused by that nail had to be ignored in order to sit. Surgery to remove the nail went well. She continues to visit Health Care Facilities and Public Schools compiling over 475 hours of animal assisted interactions to date. The Angel Paws Anti-Bully Program, with Tara a presentation participant for over three years, has included her injury experience as an example of how animals can be targeted by a Bully. The experience also aids children in understanding how learning can occur differently for reasons which are not always obvious. Tara’s activities include Dog Safety and the Fuzzy Friends READ Program which fosters enjoyment from reading and the development of higher level skills in at risk children. She has found her calling.
