Bentley James Taylor — Service
Bentley James Taylor is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I love him more than he will ever know.
I believe he deserves the title of American Hero Dog because he has saved my life more times than I can count, and he’s touched so many lives besides my own.
I owner-trained Bentley, and he’s always been very in tune with me. He loved our training sessions, learned new tasks very quickly, and is an incredibly intelligent dog.
People sometimes say shelter dogs can’t make good service animals, but I believe Bentley is living proof against that. He came from a rescue, and the second I met him he stole my heart.
He is trained to help me with my chronic CPTSD/DID, and in order to do so he has to be focused on me and watching for certain cues to alert me. For instance, when I wake up from a nightmare sometimes I’ll be stuck in a flashback. He’ll automatically lay down beside me and lean into me in order to help me ground myself until I’m able to calm down enough to go back to sleep.
When I’m stuck in a severe anxiety or panic attack, he can actually alert me before those episodes get out of control, and he performs tasks to help snap me out of it.
Aside from his service dog tasks and training, I’ve had countless people tell me he’s the definition of their ideal dog. People always comment on how calm and loving he is, how focused he can be, and how trustworthy he is.
I feel that Bentley is the definition of an American Hero Dog; he’s definitely my hero.
