Callie — Therapy
Callie is a small husky mix who was rescued from a high kill shelter. She is quietly contemplative while working but high energy at home and especially loves working with children and students. The picture shows her visiting the staff and students at a local high school to help them de-stress. She will often dress up which helps to overcome or break the ice with children and adults, even with ones who may lack confidence interacting with dogs or be fearful of interacting with dogs. She has been fortunate to be able to continue to visit virtually (furtual) during the Covid-19 pandemic lock downs. Initially providing visits to hospital staff to help them de-stress during long difficult shifts (Callie dressed in her nursing cap and plastic stethoscope) and then helping with kids for reading programs with libraries which were set up via zoom wearing her heart shaped pink sunglasses. In addition to improving confidence and literacy skills, the reading visits often provided a needed social interaction during a time of isolation. The children would proudly introduce Callie to their family, pets and art projects they were doing.
