Copper — Search and Rescue

Location: Punta Gorda, Florida

K9 Copper was rescued from a local welfare league and brought into the life of the Sheriff’s Office as a search and rescue dog for missing adults and children. Copper was adopted in March of 2020 and has been a vital asset to the Sheriff’s Office since then. K9 Copper from the completion of his training to now has successfully located 7 adults/children and assisted in getting them home safely. One of the biggest finds Copper had was a elderly female who had been missing for over 24 hours. K9 Copper was given the scent from a K-9 Scent Kit that had been provided in case of incidents as such. K9 Copper tracked successfully, leading DFC Sella to the location of the female who was standing in waste deep water, holding onto a buoy system in the water. Without the assistance of K9 Copper, this female likely would have not survived much longer. K-9 Copper also located a suicidal subject who had fled the residence. This subject was located in an attempt to harm himself and without the assistance of K-9 Copper, its likely this case would have turned to a worse direction. K-9 Copper has been very successful thus far and therefore, I feel as his handler that he is a Hero.
