Hurricane — Law Enforcement and Detection
Meet K9 Hurricane, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois recognized for his bravery and valor, with an all-black coat and 4 titanium teeth. K9 Hurricane joined the US Secret Service Special Operations Division-Tactical Canine Unit in November 2012. During his time in service, Hurricane was on the frontlines of protecting the POTUS, the Vice President, their families, and visiting dignitaries.
On Oct. 22nd, 2014, K9 Hurricane put all of his training to the test when an intruder jumped the White House fence while President Obama and the First Family were inside. When the situation started to unfold and take a turn for the worse, Hurricane deployed from the opposite side of the White House grounds.
Despite being punched, kicked, and thrown to the ground, K9 Hurricane pushed the intruder back until officers were able to apprehend the suspect. K9 Hurricane’s bravery has garnered broad national and international coverage, making him one of the most decorated living K9s. Hurricane has received awards from the US Government for Merit and Valor as well as the PDSA Order of Merit in London, awarded at British Parliament. Hurricane is the first US dog to receive this honor.
Wanting to pay it forward, in 2020 K9 Hurricane’s Heroes was launched. K9HH, a 510c3 organization, provides “retired law enforcement and military dogs” with subsidized veterinary care. Today Hurricane loves making appearances to spread the word about K9HH where he continues to win the hearts of everyone he meets.
