Karma — Therapy
Karma was evaluated to ensure her temperament was suitable to work with children and adults of all ages as well as in traumatic and critical incidents. She was specifically trained to participate in traumatic situations and is proficient in being able to tolerate, adapt and cope with the physical and emotional stress of critical incidents. Her training included her ability to work in unpredictable, fast-paced and frequently changing environments with various types of people and other dogs.
Currently, Karma volunteers in the Canines for Community Resilience program directly with First Responders, Broward Sherriff’s Office Regional Communications Centers and visits Broward Health Coral Springs working directly in the Pediatric Emergency and Adult Emergency rooms.
In her role, Karma helps comfort children in hospitals ensuring they are at ease, calm and less stressed during their stay. She makes her rounds with the doctors to each patient room and lays on the bed with the child while procedures such as blood draws, chemotherapy, MRI’s and other tests are performed. Many of the children she visits are under the age of 15 years old. Her specialty is snuggling close to them while treatments are being performed. When COVID-19 struck our community in March 2020, Karma went to work providing outreach to the community both locally and out of state. Through the HSBC’s AAT TeleTherapy program, Karma was able to virtually visit children in hospitals all over the United States.
