Po — Shelter
Po is a gentle giant with a resilient, beautiful heart. An American hero both for what he has overcome and what he now gives back to the community who saved him.
Po was rescued after a witness reported Po’s owner attacking him brutally with a screwdriver. When brought to Chicago Animal Care & Control, he had fresh puncture wounds on his head and back and was in poor health. Po had to stay there for almost three months, and later the court ordered his ownership forfeited. While there, Safe Humane volunteers worked with him and he officially became a Court Case Dog. I fell for this good-natured, dog, fostered and soon adopted him.
Po is now a Safe Humane Ambassador Dog, friendly with people and dogs. He and I volunteer with Illinois Youth Center, YMCA’s Youth Safety & Violence Program, My Block My Hood My City, and the US Navy. He was also the official host for Safe Humane’s 2020 virtual gala and has participated in many community events, including special deliveries of party packs and good cheer during COVID. In his spare time, he excels at nosework and recently won his third nosework title. Po loves making people smile. He is a fashion icon, too, wearing a tuxedo and tank top equally well.
But it’s not just Po’s good works that make him an American hero. It is who he is – his resilience, patience, and the infinite light he shines and shares with all those around him. Po leads by example and has much to teach about forgiveness, compassion and the power of second chances.
