Harley Murray — Therapy
Harley was my retirement from the military present to myself from a local animal shelter (he is a beagle mix dog). He quickly became the significant other of my life. After a partial amputation for cancer, Harley had difficulty going to the vet and interacting with people. At the advice of a friend, I asked Mike Kaelin at the K-9 Academy in Rolla, Mo, if he would be willing to take us on. It changed both our lives. Harley became a happy dog, and I became a happy (and proud) momma. He passed Mike’s basic and advanced courses and we continued to train there for 10 months. After I completed my doctorate, it was time to take the step for therapy training. Susan Aspeotis at the FLW hospital certified us as a team. We earned our initial, therapy, and advanced therapy dog awards. We worked at the USO, the Richland Care Center, the Missouri Veterans’ Home in St. James, Mo, and my school. Mike Kaelin currently works as a vet tech ar the St. James Veterinary Medical center. Harley now receives all his care there. They are proud of him and very supportive of us as a team. Harley (and dog training) changed my life.
