Lily — Therapy
Lily is quite amazing. She was certified as a therapy dog a short while ago and now is a regular in the surgical care wing at the hospital. her job is to bring joy and comfort to the patients and their families and to help relieve the stress of a hospital stay. She truly enjoys her work. She smiles when she walks into a patient’s room and the people smile back. She loves all people young and old but she has a special place in her heart for senior citizens. When she was a puppy, we would go sit outside the senior center and watch people go by with walkers and canes so that the equipment and the sounds would not startle her later on. She was my hero long before she was certified as a therapy dog. She and I would go visit my mother in her retirement home. As my mother fell deeper into dementia there wasn’t much conversation. Often she couldn’t remember my name or Lily’s name. But Lily would put her head in my mother’s lap and my mother would pet her and say “nice dog”.
In order to keep her mind and body active and healthy we participate in and train for 5K charity runs. I’m not sure if she is training me or I am training her. Somehow she’s got me running, So she is my hero once again.
