Lucky — Emerging Hero
Lucky came into my life through a wonderful organization called Pets for Patriots. He was a humane pup and he was the first dog to walk up to me and comfort me through his gate. See I am a 10 year Army vet with numerous ailments to include PTSD, anxiety and bipolar disorder. I was looking for a dog to train as a service dog for these issues. Well in picking up Lucky and paying to get him trained we came to realize that he was a little too old and set in his ways to truly train him for this purpose. I refused to return him to the shelter because I couldn’t bear the thought of putting him back after he was able to get a taste of freedom and “walkies.” Also our kids were growing to love him as a “regular” furbaby and he took to them quite naturally. We made the decision to stop training him and allow him to just be the family pet so to say. This was the best decision we could have ever made! He is so loving and caring and he still provides support and comfort to not only the kids but myself as well. To be honest he never leaves my side for anything and he is very protective of our family alerting us to company at the door and things that go bump in the night. He can sense when you are scared or sad as he will walk up to you and lay his head in your lap or nudge your hand for you to pet him for comfort. I love Lucky so much and don’t know what we would do without him. We are so happy things turned out the way they did, I guess you can say that in the end we are the “Lucky” ones!
