Renzo — Service
I’ve been type 1 diabetic since I was 2 years old and never truly feared for my life because of the amazing job my family did taking care of me. When I was a senior in high school I started to have hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia unawareness, which means I don’t feel my blood sugar levels. I was sleeping through dangerous low episodes and walking around during the day with dangerously high levels. Someone posted about diabetic alert dogs on my Facebook page and two years of research later lead me to the organization who gave me Renzo. Renzo, who is my hero and best friend. He has not only given me peace of mind and independence, but has made me a better person. We have only been together 10 months, but the road it took to get him was worth it and he’s worth everything to me. Renzo alerted to my blood sugar the very first day we met and he’s almost never wrong. Even when I can’t trust my technology, Renzo has my back and I’m hoping we’ll be a team for a very long time. We are inseparable and I’m probably crazy to say I’m thankful for my diabetes because it brought this incredibly smart but also incredibly goofy dog into my life for the better. People may say there’s plenty of diabetic service dogs and even more service dogs more worthy of this nomination, but there’s only one Renzo and he’s mine.
